math insight

This site allows you to do conformal mapping of functions of a complex variable (note that the site does not talk about functions of a complex variable but about non-linear 2D transformations).

In order to use the site you need to do some algebra beforehand:

  • For a function w = f(z) = u + iv, where z = x + iy, you need to find u and v manually, then type these into the relevant fields.
  • E.g. f(z) = z^2 = (u + iv)^2 = (u^2 - v^2) + i(2uv)
  • So for the website, x = u^2 - v^2, and y = 2uv
I still haven't found a decent freeware conformal mapping grapher, or a freeware complex functions plotter. I would be very interested to know of any such freeware which has GNU licence. If you have any information about this that you would like to share you can contact me via the contact page.

Maxima
